2014 Update!

We have had a really cold winter at Casa del Rio Riverhouse. With the leaves off the trees you can see the hills beyond and watch the animals scurrying around. The birds are beginning to sing their spring song and the sound is exciting. There are many birds in the area, and a naturalist staying here saw these species of birds:

Ash throated Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Lark Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, House Finch, Lesser Goldfinch, Summer Tanager, Northern Cardinal, Carolina Wren, Greater Roadrunner, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Yellow Throated Warbler, Black and White Warbler, White-eyed Vireo, Gray-headed Vireo (Solitary Vireo) Turkey Vulture & Black Vulture, Mourning Dove, White-winged Dove, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Green Kingfisher, Northern Oriole, Rough-winged swallow, Barn Swallow, American Robin, Chimney Swift, Purple Martin, Painted Bunting, Bewick’s Wren, Golden-fronted Woodpecker & Great-horned Owl. WOW!

This is a place of great importance to bird watchers. The river is singing its song also rushing over the rocks and winding through the land. The bass, catfish, sunfish and others can be seen through the clear water. Fishing and Fly fishing is a fun activity as well as canoeing up to Angel Falls. Spring will soon be here and a marvelous transformation occurs when the trees begin To get their leaves. The hills disappear into the background, and the cool Guadalupe Water invites tubing and swimming.

Each season has its beauty, and the tranquil life here sooths the soul.

November 2013 // Thanksgiving is Getting Close!

Fall is here with the temperature from the 50’s in the morning to the 70’s during the day. There is an umbrella of color overhead with the trees turning from green to gold and rust. From the sense of fall in the air to the feel of peace surrounding Casa Del Rio Riverhouse, there is a desire to amble along the river, catch Guadalupe Bass, and sit in the rocking chair swings, hearing the sound of the river flow by. Thanksgiving in the Riverhouse is available, a time for a fire in the fireplace and turkey roasting in the oven.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Spending time with family is so precious. As I spend time with my family this wonderful Thanksgiving it seems it’s also a time for reflection. Digging through some old photo abums we’ve found some memories we’d like to share with you. These photographs are pictures of our place on the river as it appeared in the 1930’s and 40’s (click on one to enlarge and scroll through). Right away.. my grand children are shocked at how small the trees were. All they know is what they’ve seen which are the Giant Cypress that all gather along the banks of the Guadalupe today. You can see them too if you compare some of the photos on this site with the ones here or visit us. We hope you enjoy these photos as much as we do… My how time goes by.

As a gift we’ve attached a scan of our family turkey stuffing recipe. It’s wonderful. It’s under great controversy even as I type this but most agree (at least) that the recipe is a collaboration between myself and my Mother, Ruby Dykes, who passed some time ago. We have many fond memories of her.. My Grand children affectionately refer to her as “Munna”.

Our Thanksgiving Blessing: We are thankful and at peace as we reflect on times past. We also acknowledge the gratitude we have today for the love of each other and excitement in the joy of things to come.

Dune Buggy Extravaganza at Casa Del Rio!

It’s about time we got to post this wonderful event. We are honored that The Texas Manx Dune Buggy Club made Casa Del Rio Riverhouse one of their stops this year at their annual Buggy Round-up in Boerne (and surrounding areas). They’ve done this trip for 4 years running.  All buggies represent and ride in the Labor Day parade through downtown Boerne and then do a show in the Square afterwards.  After this they do a 90+ mile drive throughout the hill country making stops at General stores, parks and other quaint attractions along the way.  This year they had 23 buggy’s attend.. They say it was their best yet! Here are some pictures of their visit. Thank you Ricky and Cyndi for spending time with us and sharing the photos of your trip!
